These layers from deep to superficial are stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum. The stratum lucidum is typically only present in the thick skin found in areas such as the palm or soles. WebThese granules have a role in keratinization and maintaining the barrier functions of the skin. The lamellar granules contain several types of lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) and hydrolytic enzymes including proteases, acid phosphatases, lipases and glycosidases (Downing, 1992; Monteiro-Riviere, 2006).
